Subscribe to the site at the link below if you care about making the net a free and creative place where artists actually have some rights and a hope of making a living.
“Spotify, Pandora and others like them pay fractions of a cent to record companies and publishers each time a song is played, some portion of which goes to performers and songwriters as royalties. Unlike the royalties from a sale, these payments accrue every time a listener clicks on a song, year after year.
The question dogging the music industry is whether these micropayments can add up to anything substantial.
“No artist will be able to survive to be professionals except those who have a significant live business, and that’s very few,” said Hartwig Masuch, chief executive of BMG Rights Management.”
The music industry is screwed. It’s gone. Sorry, that seems to be it. Any recording artist hoping to make a living nowadays has to either slog their life out playing live, put themselves in thrall to corporate sponsors, or coast on established glories, with a diminishing base of ageing fans.
For the last few years, it’s been the film and TV industry’s turn to get bent over and raped by a world full of moochers, deadbeats, and thieves. It makes me sick listening to these losers squealing about freedom, digital commons, and (for Chrissake!) ‘Copyleft’.
Like, that’s really clever.
Take a few minutes to check out the website link above. Read about what’s really happening. You think you’re ‘sticking it to the man’ every time you download a ‘free’ file? Well, you’re sticking it to someone alright, but it isn’t ‘the man’. And you’re actually supporting a system that is absolutely anti-freedom.
I actually believe in the principle of ‘digital commons’. I believe there should be free and fearless access to information on the web. But enabling free and fearless piracy is not the same thing. Do the web conglomerates that collectively facilitate and profit from the wholesale exploitation of other peoples efforts give a shit about the rights of artists? Hell no.
There’s such a mountain of bullshit out there promulgated by web pundits with no sense of ethics or morality. Do look at The Trichordist for some much needed balance.
